Imari's Tips on Writing

If you are like me, who loves writing, or to those who wish to simply express their emotions, well, this fits you. I hope these simple tips of mine will help you learn and love the world of journalism.

(Note: I may not be that professional, but my passion for writing and self-expression pushed me to write all these stuffs.)

  • READ A

    LOT

    !

This is the best thing to do. Aside from the fact that it washes away boredom, it also helps you grasp a new WORD, and a form of statement or sentence. When I find a queer word, I immediately consult Mr. Webster (for its meaning) or Ms. Thesaurus (for its synonymous words).

  • STUDY THE 8 PARTS OF SPEECH AND SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT, AND LEARN.

We are not Americans, but still we are in need of knowing these for us to write a good English piece. As we know, English is the universal language. How are we able to be globally competitive? HoW are we going to embrace the world? Of course everybody studies these basic lessons, but not all LEARN them. I did not say that you should master each (for even I, have not mastered these topics very well), but studying w/ heart will help a lot.

  • EXPRESS AND DO NOT IMPRESS.

When I think of impressing my works to others, the piece that I make usually flaps--- meaning, it turns out to be "so corny, so baduy, O.A", and sometimes, unrealistic to hear. so when you write, make sure that you've got an insight  of 99% to EXPRESS and 1% to impress.

  • PROVIDE YOUR WRITING STUFFS READY

It may be a laptop, an i-book, or simply just a journal and pen! Those MATERIALS will boost you to make your ideas be written and be published. When i see a notebook, I get inspired and I don’t know why.=>

  • WRITE IN A BEAUTIFUL PLACE W/ A PERFECT MOMENT

I usually write at night and inside my room, when everybody's asleep. With some tunes and comfy beddings, I tend to reminisce the happy and sad scenes of my past, and start to build up ideas. Find a place where you can feel the AMBIENCE of relaxation and stress-freedom, and a time for you to write. It's up to you whether you want it in a beach while the sun sets, or under the innumerable stars. It's up to you!

  • GET INSPIRED

They say that you can't write well if you're not in the mood: And that is true. Just like the actors, who can't express their emotions w/o internalizing, writers may find it hard too to stroke their pens on their papers if they do not have INSPIRATION, or reason of writing. Why are you writing these? For whom you are writing? For God, your family or the community? Remember that you need not to experience something like tragically for you to be able to write a tragic drama. However, Shakespeare or his works can be your mere inspiration for producing you self-made plays.

  • DON'T BE AFRAID TO WRITE UGLY WORKS

Whether it is "corny" or having so many wrong-grammars or wrong spellings; whether it is painted w/ redundant words, still it is a work of your mind and hands. Don't think that your piece is some kind of an ugly thing. There have been reasons why you wrote it: Maybe that time you were so much in love and all you wanted is to be poetic, which led you to being so "corny". Let me tell you, I'd have so many compositions that were so... arghhh!!! Sometimes, I want to tear them up, but I realized that those were parts of my reserved MEMOIRS.

  • FIND BEAUTY IN LITTLE THINGS

Was it the sunset more beautiful than the sunrise? Did you notice the gracefulness behind a falling leaf? Find beauty in little things and write about it. With a little APPRECIATION on the movements of waves, you may produce a very inspiring poem or essay.

  • WRITE WITH FRIENDS AND BE CRITICIZED

When I first discovered my writing muse in H.S, it was with my friends whom I found with the same interest. We usually EXCHANGE works and criticize each. It may sometimes be offensive, but criticisms are the best that make our composures better. Remember to take it not destructively, but constructively instead.

nice post based on experience ;)

i remember the time when i was so eager to post at my blog but after some few months i started posting some crap :(

I do appreciate your work.,
can you do me a favor, pls??! i'm counting on you.^_^

hhmm...got some points there...its great that people like you are trying to make a difference...i have some additionals though---

yah, never write to impress, unless you want to spoil the tale of the article. people dont read things they cant understand. so keep it basic, write as you speak but maintain the finness and art of translating thoughts into words...

never, as in NEVER ignore the demons from your body. once the inpiration comes write them immediately or you will suffer from forever losing them...too bad di ba? ideas come only once, if your fortunate it will pass by you again but in another form.

consume your time reading...i guess that's the best thing one can do. more experienced authors will transfer their ideas (and style!) in you and you can manipulate these same ideas in your own pieces...AND, never limit your time for reading. read from sun up to sun down.

hey, check my blog on a writer's confession if u'v got time.
